Southport Constructions have renovated or built from the ground up, over one hundred homes and commercial buildings across greater Melbourne. The name Southport originated from the company’s roots starting in South Melbourne and Port Melbourne. Many of the homes the company has built are in these areas.
Today Spotswood is home to our Southport Constructions workshop. We are located close to the train station, opposite a welcoming park and just minutes from the mouth of the river. The Builder in Southport Constructions is Chris Smith, alongside our treasured contractors, and Matt Nott our cabinetmaker. Chris finished his apprenticeship in 1978 and established the company in 1985. The building industry since then has seen many transformations. Chris has consistently kept his clients first and foremost, always ensuring he completes every job to the highest standard. His character is as resilient as the homes he builds. Over the decades, through trial and error, hardship and success Chris has gained a wealth of knowledge and deep insights. With these in hand he has forged a business perspective and style uniquely his own. Because he has weathered many storms Chris has developed the philosophical and emotional capacity to bring to your project and all the people involved, calm and genuine warmth. Chris is the real deal; you’ll find that out pretty quickly. He does what he says he will do. He believes the old building adage “measure twice, cut once” – getting it right from the start…. is true for relationship building too. He will therefore spend considered time with you to ensure the outcome you want. Chris is “old school” in that he believes homes should be built to last lifetimes. He takes great care and uses quality materials. Upon completing a project Chris is able to say, “There’s a bit of me in that house and I’m proud of what I’ve built.” You will feel a sense of security and confidence in Chris as you undertake the build together. Another of his great attributes is his ability to solve problems. Projects always have a budget and Chris’s knowledge and expertise will maximise the potential of any project, within its budgetary constraints. |
He’s been described by those who love him as ‘salt of the earth’ and ‘solid as a rock.’ Chris is a family man; father to two beautiful daughters, Lily and Ruby, husband to Cherie and always motivated to take care of his family and the greater community with his generous spirit.

In fact, they laugh that they often make their best decisions at 4am in the morning! Building a home or embarking on a commercial project can throw up many obstacles. Southport Constructions has navigated its own difficult terrain at times. Life is never consistently smooth and there have been tough moments, however Chris and Cherie have always dug deep and found courage to keep moving forward.
Chris values Cherie for many things, among them that she brings to the business a depth of wisdom sourced from her spiritual pathway. She has backed Chris in the multiple roles of confidante, bookkeeper and marketer whilst holding the home space as they raised their two daughters. Cherie is hard working, compassionate, generous and dedicated to being of service. She also has a business Heavenly Housekeepers in partnership with their eldest daughter Lily, offering organising, cleaning and cooking services.
Matt is Southport’s trusted cabinetmaker. He has been an invaluable member of their staff for over 25 years and has honed his skills to the highest standard. Chris and Cherie often say they don’t know what they’d do without him. Matt is another calm, considered, intelligent and thoughtful human being. Always smiling, he is married to the lovely Robyn and the dad of five children. Yes that's correct… five!
Contractors are essential to Southport Constructions. After many years of working with tradesmen, Chris has narrowed his cohort down to the best. These men are true craftsmen and he absolutely treasures them. He knows you will feel equally fortunate to have these talented contractors bring to your project their bespoke work and attention to detail.
